Maintenance And Inspection Recommendations For Your Home Roof

Posted on

The roof on your home is built to last for many decades, and the shingles and roof structure provide a good part of this protection to your home. As with any area on your home, you need to look out for signs of damage and problems so you can maintain this important part of your home and property. Here are some tips to help you keep an eye on and maintain your roof.

Check Your Roof's Condition

At the very least, you should look up at your roof a couple of times each year to make sure it looks like it is still working properly. Take some time and look at the shingles on your roof to make sure they are all intact and not curling up, missing, or broken. You should also look at the line the flashing makes along your roof. If it appears crooked or lifted up, this can be a big sign that the flashing is damaged and not working right for your roof's protection. Look at the roofing edge or the drip edge along your roof for any bent pieces or edging that is lifted up.

You should also look at the gutters on your roof's edges to make sure they are all accounted for and none are broken or sagging. A missing rain gutter or downspout can put your home at risk of basement moisture problems and a slippery sidewalk that present a hazard to anyone who walks across the surface.

Clean Roof Areas

In addition to looking at the visual condition of your home's gutters, you should clean them out on a regular basis. Twice a year, or more often if you have a lot of trees in your yard, you should remove pine needles, leaves, twigs, and seed pods that may have collected in your rain gutters. This is a great project to give to a gutter professional, which they can complete along with an inspection of the gutters.

Hire a Professional

As a homeowner, you are not going to handle all the maintenance and cleaning on your own that your roof needs. Your roof is situated at a high elevation, which makes it in a difficult location and poses a risk if you were to fall from its surface. For this reason, you should take a step further after you complete your own visual inspection from the ground to arrange for professional repairs, cleaning, and replacement.
