Got A "Honey-Do" List And No "Honey"? How To Remedy That

Posted on

So, your husband left and you have the house. This is a good thing, until you realize that you have none of the skills needed to maintain the home. Do not sweat it; even some men cannot fix things around the house. They may want to, but they do not know much more than you. As time marches on, and you start developing a "honey-do" list with no "honey" to do the things on the list, you will have to resort to other measures. Here are some of your options.

Hire a Contractor

If the project is a big one, such as pouring a concrete driveway, you will want to hire a contractor. This is your most expensive option, but at least the contractor is licensed, insured, bonded, and his/her work is guaranteed. Big projects are worth hiring a contractor for, since you want to be absolutely certain that the project is perfectly done and it will not have to be redone anytime soon.

Hire a Handyman

Not so long ago (about forty years, give or take a decade), handymen were quite common. Work was scarce, so these guys went door to door looking for odd jobs to make some cash. You do not hear about that much anymore because professional handymen have started working for companies that provide these services to homeowners. Instead of the door-to-door stranger, you now get an employee of a company, like Eager Beaver Handyman Services, to do your odd jobs. In fact, you will probably get two or more, since many of these businesses send a team over for personal and business safety reasons.

Become Self-Sufficient

It is not impossible to learn what you need to know to fix a leaky faucet, replace a toilet, or install a closet system in your bedroom closet. In fact, many women (and some men!) take short courses in how to do these things. Home improvement stores actually offer these very classes in the evenings and on weekends so that you can fit them into your schedule.

A monthly calendar of events is posted on the websites of these home improvement stores in case you want to look ahead and register for a class. The classes are usually free, and then you can buy what you need to start and finish the project at home on your own. As an added bonus, you will feel very proud and accomplished for learning how to do things yourself.
